What should I wear?
You should wear something that is comfortable and easy to move in. Although we do not have a dress code, most students wear what could be considered "nice casual". Shoes are probably the most important thing to consider.

What kind of shoes should I wear?
You should wear comfortable shoes with leather or "smooth" soles that stay on your feet well; shoes that lace up or have adjustable straps are great. Sneakers, rubber-soled shoes and shoes that are too big are very difficult to dance in. At some point in your dancing, you may want to invest in a pair of high quality dance shoes. Your instructor can help you when that time comes.

Do I need to bring a partner?
Not at all! If you do not have a partner, your instructor will partner you during your private lessons. During the group classes, we will typically ask you to rotate partners several times during the class. This gives you the opportunity to try different partners and challenges your leading/following ability since no two people lead or follow the same way. Plus, it's a great way to meet new people!

Do we have to change partners in group class?
Although rotating partners has been proven to help your dancing, rotating is by no means mandatory. You and your partner are free to stay with each other for the whole class; just be sure to let the instructor know that you would like to stay with your partner so that he/she can accommodate you without confusing the other students.

I have two left feet. Can you help me?
Fortunately, we have yet to meet anyone with two right feet so yes, we can help :) At Fred Astaire Dance Studio, we remember that everyone was a beginner at some point, even us! Being nervous about your first lesson is only normal and is to be expected. The staff at Fred Astaire Dance Studio is highly qualified and trained at helping you overcome the first time jitters.

Should I start with private or group classes?
We generally recommend starting with a private lesson as the private lessons are catered to the individual student's goals and needs. Your instructor can then review the group class schedule and may make recommendations for which group classes would be most suited for you.

Which dances will I learn in my lessons?
At Fred Astaire Dance Studio, we teach over 20 dances so you have many options. If you have a certain dance or dance style in mind, just let your instructor know and we can certainly accommodate you. Many students, however, are not for sure which dances they would like to learn or which are the most popular. In this case, your instructor will simply introduce you to a variety of the most popular styles and then you can choose for yourself which styles you prefer.
